Default changing float and float lever rod on King Seely fuel sender

I have found an OEM King Seely fuel guage sender that tested good but it has the different model float rod than the tank I am using. How hard is it to change float rods? It looks like it has a a sleeve at the end that might could be pryed open and reused with the rod I need.

Yes, NOS senders have the sleeve ready to crimp onto a different rod. If you PM me your email address I will send you a chart that shows how to adjust the new lever as, different tanks have different travel of the float. There is a stop tab for full and one for empty that you bend to accomplish this. If your sleeve doesn't want to open there are sleeves with set screws like for carb linkage that will work too. You may not have noticed but the screw pattern is such that the sender can only go in 1 way for all the holes to line up.

James: Good King Seely gas tank sending units are really hard to find.

Rather than try to pry apart that connector, I leave the connector alone and cut the longer straight part of the rod with wire snippers and resolder the new rod or modified original rod to the remaining longer piece. That "squeezed" connector is too close to the inner workings of the sending unit that can be too easily damaged if you start trying to pry it open. The inside of a KS gas tank sending unit is extremely delicate and easily broken.

It's a lot easier if you "tin" both pieces of the cut rod before you rejoin them. I even made a new rod out of a steel coat hangar bent to shape. If I had small dia. brazing rod I would use that as a new rod. You could also braze rather than solder but, it's not needed.

My thinking is that if you try to pry open that connector you may inadvertently damage to inner workings of the unit. Also, I seriously double if you could ever "squeeze" the connector tight enough to secure and position the rod and float like it originally was.

You could also cut the long part of the original rod and then remove the vinyl insulation from a standard blue, red, or yellow "butt" electrical wire connector that fits the dia. of your rod and then crimp and solder that in place.

I'm glad I heard from you two before I attempted this. Thank you both.

If you can find a repair shop that recently replace a modern car fuel pump module the float and arm can be harvested

I did the cut/solder thing when I replaced the arm on the sender for my '46 Coupe. Pre-tinned as suggested above, wrapped with small copper wire, then soldered. It is important that the float arm is "calibrated" so the float does not hit the top of the tank when full, or the bottom when near empty. Either condition will cause erroneous readings, and/or damage to the float.

I just went thru this with deuce roadster help
The crimp comes apart very easy, and re crimps perfectly.

I didn't want to use heat so close to the plastic bearings in the sending unit....these sending units are difficult to find

James, 51woodie's suggestion is "the best". Also, make sure there are no cracks or pin holes in your float.

James: Read every thread listed here and also all l the links included in each thread. It includes lots of detailed info. about the KS sending units that will help you greatly, including how the little star wheel inside the unit operates.
