Default Transmission run it or take it apart?

I bought a chassis from an older restored 32. The transmission has no gear damage and I can’t feel any play. The guy I bought it from drove it a little before the car was taken apart and said it shifts nice. The transmission has newer gear oil (does not have the Ford smell). It needs a front seal as it leaks a little. I don’t know if possibly a rear as well.
Question- clean it out and run as is or tear it down?

Hey, you've got it out and opened up already. Take it apart and if necessary, replace the seals if they appear bad. Duh.

Since you already have it out, fix the seal and reinstall it. Then drive it to see its true condition.

The trans in my '39 p/u was iffy at best when I bought it. I found a '39 trans that the owner of a local muffler shop removed from his '39 convertible when he installed a C4. When I bought it I asked him if I should go through it or run it. He said run it as is. that was over 10.000 miles ago and other than some typical leaks from the rear shafts it is problem free. That said, I'd run it. but that's JMO.

I was planning on replacing the front seal, just wondering if I should pull the gears out. It is still in the chassis, motor coming out soon.

32 does not have a front or rear seal.

You can fit a 78 prefix [later model] front bearing retainer which will enable you to run a front seal.

judging by the condition of first gear, and the chevrons on second, that thing looks new. Flush it out, put in new GL 4 and go

I'm a fan if it's not broke leave it alone. I like to drive it. Flush it and drive it. Rotate the gear set and see if you have any broken teeth.

There is not such a thing as a leak less old original ford. It was designed to leak oil the chassis. Just kidding, but you are going to drop a few drops from time to time if it's original. No big deal. If it's more then a drop like a quart then worry.

I'm with Tinker. If it ain't broke....... I'm no mechanic but if it is in good shape and by your admission "leaks a little" then clean it and refill it with the proper lube as Cas3 suggests in post #10 and drive it. You can monitor it over time and who knows, perhaps with use the leak will diminish. Certainly worth a try before surgery.

I will clean it, add the new bearing retainer and try it. There are no chips or any sign of gear damage. Does anyone have the new seal number for the new style seal?
Thanks

Agreed. Clean it out, RTV around that front cover and run it.

Agreed with the "crew". I cleaned and new oil in my'34 tranny 9 years ago and have not had any problem. Drive the '34 in Spring, Summer and Fall and she goes Great!
