1929 Coupe sheet metal question
There appears to have been a body panel in the subframe under the curved inner panel for the rumble lid. Due to extensive rust, the curved inner panel and rumble seat riser have to be replaced. However, there are fragments of another panel under the curved inner panel remaining.
I cannot find this panel from several of the major vendors…was this a standard item on ‘29 coupes, or a home-made repair before I got the car ? Many thanks - Jim |

Re: 1929 Coupe sheet metal question

The remnants of the panel in my coupe are attached at the bottom of the outer panel. I’ll post a pic from my ‘29 coupe rumble compartment tomorrow. Thanks - Jim |

Re: 1929 Coupe sheet metal question
Here are pics of the rear lower panel of the rumble seat compartment. The new rumble seat riser is not yet attached - just sitting on the subrails for now.
You can see remnants of another sheet metal panel at either end of the lower panel near the bottom where it fastens to the rear subrail. Jim |

Re: 1929 Coupe sheet metal question
The rear sub structure can go either way as far as the rear trunk panel or the curved panel of the rumble seat installation. The sub-frame rear cross member is the major structure back there and then there is a reinforcement for spare tire bracket mounting structure that ties the cross member to the rear body panel.
The rest of it is the two side panels and vertical rear body braces. The trunk panel structure was set up to deal with rain water that will inter on the back side of the deck lid. The curved inner panel for the rumble type deck lid also deals with rain water as a scupper. If the car was ever converted from a trunk to a rumble seat car then there might be old pieces of trunk panel back there. I've seen all sorts of home brewed panels to replace rusted out rear panels and curved panels so nothing surprises me anymore. This link is an inner panel for a trunk from Bratton's. https://www.brattons.com/CURVED-INNE...uctinfo/35150/ This is a rumble inner panel. https://www.brattons.com/28-29-COUPE...uctinfo/35160/ This is the center spare tire brace but it would have to be shortened to work on a 28/29 coupe. https://www.brattons.com/30-31-OUTER...uctinfo/35250/ It looks like the spare tire brace is gone. The remnants are small so it's hard to tell what kind of inner panel it had back there. Last edited by rotorwrench; 04-23-2022 at 09:09 AM. |

The rumble seat hardware appears to be factory original; the rumble lid worked pretty well when I removed it to start work on the car. If the rumble seat is original from the factory, would the curved inner panel be the only sheet metal between the seat riser and rear outer panel ? Thanks - Jim |

Re: 1929 Coupe sheet metal question
I was able to crawl under the rear of a restored ‘29 Sport Coupe this morning and saw only the curved inner panel on the underside of the rumble compartment behind the seat riser.
So, I believe the sheet metal remnants I see attached to the outer lower panel on my ‘29 coupe are home-made and installed by a previous owner. Jim |

Re: 1929 Coupe sheet metal question
The curved panel is the only sheet metal panel between the rear structure and the seat riser for the rumble seat cushion.

Re: 1929 Coupe sheet metal question
Your questions have been answered above but thought I’d pass these pictures along. Got these panels, package tray and riser from a Guy street rodding a ‘29 coupe. He was going to scrap so I decided to save. Bit of a puzzle how they arrange but appears to be the rumble seat style from the rear curved panel.

Re: 1929 Coupe sheet metal question
I've had resizing issues like this before. It makes the photos impossible to view properly. That is certainly the complete selection of rear floor related panels though.
Sometimes reducing the resolution a bit is enough without actualy resizing the photo. It just depends on how you do it. It takes some getting used to. |

Re: 1929 Coupe sheet metal question
Yes it’s frustrating when a phone takes nice clear zoomable photo. And then I resize to a fuzzy mess to be able to post. I will try that resolution method next time once I figure it out.
