I saw one about 20 years ago parked outside a scapyard in upstate ny. It was complete with snowblower and the body was excellent. It had a V8 to power the snowblower. The owner said it came from a small airport and would sell it for 3000.00 I should have bought it but wife said I have enough crap that I will never get to .... She was right.(for once)
A few years later I acquired a 39 MH complete chassis that I still have but now realize I will never get to do anything with it I would like to see it go to someone who can use it. If anyone is interested send me a PM. Mark

If I go diesel I would hope to keep transfer case and diffs assuming they would hold up to a 12 valve cummings diesel.
The engine, tranny and gear reducer I would most likely sell

If I was going to a Cummins diesel, I would go with the later trans and transfer case as well as later axles. The old equipment was made well enough but it is harder to get parts for and a Cummins has a lot more torque than a flathead V8. You would first have to adapt it then you would have to be real easy on it.

The NV4500 5-speed might be usable with an NP 205 or NP 241 transfer case but even those can be hard to come by. Dana 60 or stronger axles would be heavy enough. The Timken Detroit stuff is pretty antiquated for use with a modern engine like that.

For reference, the Cummins 6BT 5.9L engine originally used in the Dodge pickup trucks in 1989 had a peak torque rating of 400 lb-ft @ 1600 rpm and peak power rating of 160 hp @ 2500 rpm. That is before anyone starts to modify the fueling, which has been known to happen.

P.S. That was the lowest power rating for the on-highway 6BT engine at that time. Today the engine displacement has grown as well as the power and torque capability which is about double the original rating.

The went clear up to 180 HP before the 24 valve engines came out but the torque is way out there.

The axles might hold up if you don’t beat on it, but with a top speed of 50ish with a modern overdrive tranny why bother. The transfer case would probably exploded the first time you hammered it. It’s 4x4 all the time, that’s a lot of traction on pavement. I’m gonna be honest, even if you changed things and could go 50ish mph. That would be down right scary with how that truck handles and bounces all over.

I finally sorted out my rims
I bought 6) 19.5 10 bolt ford rims with good tires $175.00 for all, then machined out the hub bore and then machined 5 of the 10 bolt holes to the old 5 on 8" pattern and the holes worked out perfect just enough meat to counter sink
