Default Y-block date code, quick question ?

I'd like a bit of confirmation so the info I'm giving the owner is more than just my opinion, and a link to a website he's never heard of.

I found this block number in a '57 Bird today, EDB-A. Which I believe would be a '55 to '57 292 block, cast in Dearborn. The block number is just behind the generator (not above the oil filter which would indicate a Cleveland block). It's my understanding all '55/'57 T-Bird blocks were cast in Cleveland.

Here's the part I'm not too sure about, the Date Code... 50K:3
I'm fairly sure the 5 signifies 1955
and the K is for October.
but what does the whole date code number mean???

I flipped the photos of the upside down numbers on the block right-side up, for your viewing pleasure.

Close - No Cigar !

I"ll post up a picture of the breakdown.

1st digit is the year

2nd position is the month (1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8-9-0-A-B)

3rd position can mean two things depending on if that position uses a number or a letter.

eg-1-2-3-4-and sometimes 5 designates the week of the month

If letters are used in that 3rd spot then - A - Z EXCEPT - an i , decrees the day in the month ALSO SEE ABOUT THE INVERTED LETTERS IN THE ACCOMPANING PICTURES.

Your 3=third shift

Thanks,
Let's see if I got this right.. date code 50K:3
5 = 1955
0 = 10th month of the year = October
K = 11th letter of the alphabet = 10th day of the month because letter "I" is skipped.
and the 3 = 3rd shift.
So this engine block was cast on Oct. 10 of 1955, presumably for a model year '56 vehicle.

Does anyone know if my assumption is correct that original '55/'57 T-Bird engine blocks were only Cleveland castings??? I thought I read that in a T-Bird book but can't recall for sure at the moment.

According to the Thunderbird Restoration Manual by Gil Baumgartner -

ALL OF THE THUNDERBIRD ENGINES AND HEADS USED ON THE 55-57 THUNDERBIRDS WERE CAST AT CLEVELAND.

However there is no mention of where the supercharger heads were cast ???

The 57 T Bird heads all had the large casting of ECZ G from Cleveland.

The small ECZ G heads were made at DIF.

I think its interesting to note that no large letter ECZ G heads have been found to be posted.
