I got the pickup panel all together and finished enough to take over to my buddy who will put it on for me. I will post more pics in tomorrow but here is one you can check out ....

I also got one of the rear drums cut and it slips on so I will get to work on cleaning, greasing, and installing everything tomorrow. Then it is on to the front hubs to repack the bearings and drop the rear end fluid while that is all being done .... between my 32 build, the pickup panel fab, and the prepping of the roadster for the trip, I feel like I am back in college, trying to squeeze 30 hours of stuff into a 24 hour day but I am having a blast!

The passenger side drum that went on right from the get go is really tight. I am going to try the one drum that was cut just a little more than the drum that's on there and see what happens ....

A couple more pics .....

Ok, issues/problems/mistakes:

1 - I should not have made that first bend - it messed up trying to do the other bends
2 - you should probably start from the inside bends, working your way out
3 - you cannot try and "meld" bends - I had bent up both the inner and outer piece and that was a mistake, thinking I could overlap and weld them together - NOT! I ended up trimming off the bends on the small piece and welding it directly to the larger piece as you saw ....
4 - also, the major bends should be done on the small piece - easier to handle and make the bends with. You should have seen me making the bends on that big piece - LOLOLOLOL!!!!
5 - finally, your welds should be on an outside corner, not an inside one. It is easier to "dress" the weld on an outside one.

Many thanks to Dave over at the House of Fab who allowed me free range with the metal brake and a very cool magnitized brake unit that I cannot wait to use again - a really cool tool ....

Can't wait for the next piece to do - this really worked out because you can't see this part unless you remove the passenger rear wheel - it's under the wheel well and the tire blocks its view - perfect for my first attempt!

What I did to arc my newly riveted shoes was get a 60 grit sanding belt, cut it & place inside the drum then just run the shoe back & forth until it fits.
Good luck on your run. First year that I won't be going. boo hoo my favorite show of all. It is about a 1600 to 2000 mile round trip from eastern Ore. to LA & back. Getting tooo old for the 32 roadster on those lousy Cal hi-ways.

Continued working on the roadster prep but nothing ever goes easy, right? Removed the front tires, my f-100 front and removed hub to repack the bearings. Passenger side went well but the driver side drum had an external weight that interfeared with the wide five adapter as it would not go flat to the drum. The f-100 front drum brakes were the same from 53-66 and I bought the newest drums when I first built my roadster. Fortunately I had another original pair of drums and put that one on instead. But, another problem cropped up as the newer drum was very thick and the lug nuts only screwed on half way, but the older is thinner and allows the lugnuts to go on all the way. So, got the other drum and prepped it to be installed but ran out of time.

The last pic is of my 32 5-window project chassis taken from the mezzanine in my garage .... just a teaser ....

Front brakes are now all adjusted, fresh rearend fluid installed but I will have to cut another drum as the fit of the one side that went on initially is too tight. Got that in the works .....

I was not going to go back to the place that charged me $105 to cut a drum so I started doing some research. Nearest place to me is in Roanoke, VA - about 5 hours away. Made a few phone calls and I have made arrangements to at least get my drum to Roanoke. The fellow who is going to cut the drum is going to Charlotte Spring Auto Fair on Friday - I will be there on Thursday. But, he has a buddy who is vending there Thurs-Sat. I will drop off the drum to him on Thursday and hopefully take a ride to Roanoke early next week to visit a few folks whom I have befriended in the last few years and pick up my drum.

Geesh - what we do not go through when working on these old cars ....

Got my second drum all squared away - had to cut it a full 1/8". But, now everything is reassembled and adjusted. I just need to bleed the brakes and this portion of the run through for the trip to LA is done .....

I keep chipping away at it ....

So did I but it had to be done. I was not going to get into a long drawn out battle. The car stoppwd quite well before swapping drums and I am not expecting anything duffetent now. There is plenty of meat left on these drums I can tell you that. But - believe me, if there are any anomalies I find out about before I go, and I will drive it on some trips to be sure, I will go to plan "B" ....

Twice I've encountered overcut drum scenarios (by 'green' service mechanics who thought they could get away with something) The one damaged two parked cars. The limits are real. Take care my friend.

Got my brakes all squared away with a some help from my buddy John, johnrodz here and on the Hamb. Just in time too as there's a show in town in Williamsburg this weekend and I will be leading the Friday night cruise with it.

I also installed balancing beads in the tires and she rides smooth, real smooth! I will post a couple pics in the next day or so ....

OK - so I am back in withdrawels. Took the car ro a shop open house in Richmond, johnrodz riding shotgun, and we noticed a definite vibration by the right rear tire. Once back home, I investigated the problem and determined the rear drums were fine, no axle problems, save for a bent rim. So, I had 2 extras and with some help from johnrodz we came up with a method of checking runout. Both of mine were bad, looked at 5 at House of Fab and one turned out to be a possible but more for a spare. Checked out several others and struck out, 3 from another friend and 5 five additional at another buddies place. Struck out on all counts.

I will be looking at another stash of rims tomorrow and another new friend has one he's leaving out for me. I have also had multiple offers here on this forum such that if all else fails, I will going a more long distance route. Thanks guys - I really appreciate it.

I did give the car a full chassis lube, working at going through what tools to bring, and have started emptying and organizing the trunk. Much to do yet but I am making progress, just slowly ....

Finally found two rims that are real nice and ready to go and another that can be used as a temporary spare unless I find someone who straightens rims - whew! I did look at 8 more today from my buddy Joe - took them all home and the first one I picked up was a beaut. So, cleaned it up, painted it, and got my tire mounted. I am back in business ....

Sorry for not posting in a while - been busy with life and such. I have nearly sorted out my brake problems - just have a pulsating pedal when braking having to do with the front brakes. I will get that sorted out shortly.

I changed the oil, removed the top and cleaned it up, glued some of the piping that was sagging, and resealed it up front over top of the windshield. Since this car used to be a 5-window, the fiberglass top (which was crafted by the previous owner - I just added some wood for some stiffening and areas to insert some side curtains) is a lift off and has an aluminum connecting piece up front that attaches tot he top of the windshield surround by three small bolts. Along with that strip is a rubber gasket that keeps the water out. I noticed some drips entering the cabin as of late so I added some new weatherstripping. We'll find out if it will work with the first rain storm ....

I also checked all of the bolts and such underneath, the FE and RE, got the oil changed, repacked the trunk with all of my spare parts, tools (I cut down from 4 to 2 toolboxes), updated my GPS, bought a new road atlas, and I will have my battery powered air ratchet and drill with some drill bits, and the list goes on, even beyond what I first posted. I will be leaving in less than 2 weeks - can't believe it's almost here!

I will chronicle everything here so stay tuned - only thing left to do is swap out my front drums (long story), install some fresh plugs, pack and go ..... naaaaa, I'm not excited .....
