Default 1937 Ford carburetor

I have a 1937 Ford 85 hp with a Stromberg 48 carburetor which someone added along with what I am assuming is not original, a 1/2" carb to intake spacer with vacuum port. Since I do not need the vacuum port does anyone know if I can just remove the spacer or is it needed?

Does your '37 have a two-speed rear-end aka a Columbia Overdrive? If not, removing the spacer will not cause a problem....

the mounting studs will be long but they can also be changed. Many of the hardware stores carry the proper stud.

No two speed rear end. I have also noticed that some people place an extra tall spacer under the carb, is that for keeping the carb cool?

The original carburetor for a 85 hp '37 was a 97, not a 48.

Yes, someone replaced it with a 48 and along with adding the spacer I am assuming.

Was there originally any spacer between the carb and the intake or just the gasket?

That may have been for a Marvel Mystery Oiler or Ampco oiler.

Could the spacer be a left over part of a Southwind Gas Heater set up?

I pulled the carb, so I got a pic of the spacer.

Certainly looks like a southwind vacuum plate.

Looks about same size pipe as the Columbia OD needs.
I need one.

After the war, Ford used this location for the vacuum for the wipers. I think the wiper works better getting vacuum at this location instead of between two intake ports.
