Spline problem
When I built my ‘32 phaeton 30 years ago I found a good ‘36 rear end assembly, had the driveshaft and torque tube shortened and installed it on my ‘32. Recently I decided I wanted a highway gear, so I bought a 3.25 ring gear and pinion. When installing it we noticed the new pinion had 6 splines, and my old driveshaft had 10 splines. A friend had a 6 spline driveshaft, but it’s splines are about half worn off, which makes for about an eighth inch of play. In talking with Early Ford V8 Sales I learned that they have a spline adapter they call the “double 6”. My plan is to have a machinist drill out the old splines in the driveshaft and weld in this plug (adapter). Will this work okay? Thanks, Sid

Re: Spline problem
I have that exact thing in my avatar 32.
If your machine shop is good it should be an easy job for them. Make sure they measure accurately from some mark on the drive shaft to the center of the hole for the pin that goes into the pinion before boring out the end of the driveshaft. That way the driveshaft ends up exactly the same length if the hole in the adapter is this same distance after welding the adapter in. |
