Default The Easter Bunny's Mad at Me

So, I got my '30 Coupe out of storage about a week ago and have been going for drives and adjusting this and that - finding squeaks etc. etc. Some years ago I bought a new rad from Mac's - their cheapest one. You get what you pay for - right. Anyway this rad never did the job. In summer the engine overheated etc. I should have suspected something right away when the cooling system only held 2 1/2 gallons with this rad.

I have been threatening to replace this rad for some time, but have met with chilly resistance from my social director (aka wife).

Today I got about a mile from home and BANG!! - a blade broke off my four blade fan and went through the rad. Luckily, no damage to the hood.

Guess what my social director is getting for Mother's Day - an early Mother's Day to boot. Hint - it will probably come from Berg's or Brassworks!!

Happy Easter from Dick

I'd go with Berg's and this could be a blessing in disguise. Maybe it saved you from a cooked engine later this summer. Buy the Snyder's aluminum fan also.

I was in the back yard a few minutes ago and the only thing the Easter bunny left me was piles of those black jelly beans, or are they chocolate?

Dick,

Don't forget to add the lagniappe to the Mother's Day gift for your Social Director; i.e., a new Model A fan for the new radiator.

Thanks for the advice. The crazy thing is that I already have a one piece two blade aluminum fan. I pulled the engine last fall and did a pretty complete refresh and decided to use the four blade fan to push more air (maybe) to help the cooling. Bad choice on my part.

I've already sent Berg's an email, but I don't know whether they ship to Canada.

My social director thinks that I did this on purpose in order to get a new rad!! Can you believe it??

Nice thing about my nice new two blade Snyder's fan, it will always stay nice and new because I never get around to putting it on! My original two blade needs to be replaced....got to just get it done. I've heard the same sad broken blade story over and over.

Dick,

Was this a repro 4 blade or one of the 30's four blade fans that threw the blade??

A picture would be nice so that we know which ones are a problem!!

Thanks

Benson asked me to post some pictures. Here they are. Fan is a repro that I purchased about 5 years ago.

That radiator looks like it has fewer fins than an original.
It probably has fewer tubes also.
Not good. but Berg's radiator and Snyder's fan should do the job for you.

Dick,

Thanks for the Photos and post. I just like to know which fans are breaking.

I have a 30's four blade replacement fan (the one with the 4 wide tapered blades and lots of pitch ... used on trucks) and am getting concerned.

Thinking maybe the 6 bladed plastic fans would do less damage if it ever broke!

The hood on my Sport Coupe has hole in it from a fan blade.

There is a 3 sided hole 3 1/2 inches across in the shape of the Old Peace Symbol from the "Police Action" days of long ago.

Opened it up just like a can opener!

From the looks of it I doubt that they found the blade. Unless it hit a low flying airplane going by!!

I think about that everytime I am near a running engine ... I keep my head away from the fan area when someone is reving the engine!

Tom; I think that you are correct on both - fewer fins and tubes. I have already contacted Berg's.

Thanks everyone for their comments and suggestions. As always it is much appreciated.

While you have the radiator out you might want to think about putting in a fan shroud .Are you getting a pressurized radiator ? I have a pressurized B W radiator with an over flow bottle . Run the radiator full with 4 lbs pressure . Never loose any water .

Dick, tell Diane that I am on her side, that break in the fan blade looks a little suspicious to me....
