I'm really confused!! Put a Chevy in a Ford you get flamed!! A VW is okay? Oh by the way I like breathing clean air and drinking clean water!! Pete

Thanks for the background. So 1991 through 2008 is the good engine.

Glad you got a great deal out of it.

Not sure of when the electronics came in, but by 2009 VW couldn't quite make the new stricter standard for NOX. If you're going to do this swap, check some VW websites for more specific info. I've heard that some mid-2000 TDI's had camshaft problems.

I paid $600 for the whole car but it did take a bit to find a 2.4L (4 cyl) with a standard with reasonable miles and rusted beyond repair. The vast majority are 3L (5 cyl) which are too long and auto.

Hey! As long as we're posting about TDI's. Mine is/was a 2002 with 140 K and the running gear was fine...... until my newly licensed grandson discovered passing gear.... and liked it! Now it won't drop back. It's either the passing gear or the turbo, otherwise it runs great! Any suggestions?

Licensed ?? Inspected ?? In Kalifornia we don't bother to Inspect cars...once they have yer money they don't care what ya do....and Smog ?? I live in a Non-Smog county...yes there are those in Kalifornia...we don't have enough population to keep a Smog shop in business and are exempt from Smog Inspections...plus the car is a 1931 and is exempt from any emission rules.... Year of Manufacturer plates mean ya don't even need seat belts or turn signals...one tail light is fine...as is one wiper..

Wick, I know this would be sacrilege, but I've often wondered if there would be a clean, neat way to put a Cummins 4BT in an AA so that it would look more or less stock from the outside and could be returned to the original setup later if someone desired. Fun to day dream about!
