is that simply a length of electric conduit tube, or something you concocted in your laboratory?

I saw the picture of Vince's tool and made one like it. It works great, and I got my pipe from a piece of exercise equipment setting at the curb.

it would have been nice to have had some dimensions on Vince's as I suspect the location of the cut-off stainless washer is significant, there is only so much compression to the spring while it is in the tower.

as far as finding junked exercise equipment at a curb, kinda of a shot in the dark not apt to be often repeated. though I know a restorer who drives around looking for junked washers/dryers to cut out metal panels with a torch.

this all sounds like a good reason to be an active member in a local club that provides access to shared tools.

I was looking for dimensions too. I don't have a spring to measure.
Seems kinda hard to make it without any dimensions.

Somebody once mentioned that he did a 90 degree bend on the pointy end of a Loooooooong barbecue FORK & with a helper, it worked WELL.

Here is mine. It lacks the nice finish of Tom and Vince's ones. The horseshoe washer is on an Angle inside the tube to match the springs spiral, but brazed in straight across also works OK. Tube is 1-1/8 Inside. Other dimensions are on the pic.
I hope this helps

As SAJ said, the inside diameter is 1 1/8". The rest isn't real critical, but can be determined by the picture. I saw the side off a flat washer and filed the ends to a pointed edge to help it slide into the spring coils. The bottom of the pipe is cut at an angle so it slips down over the spring, and then is pulled into the spring. I used silver solder on my washer and mounted it at an angle to match the spring coils when compressed.

Thanks Guys!
That's what I needed to make the tool.
Presently I don't have the spring but will order one for the proper angle.
