Default Horn

My horn on my 29 Roadster was working but not great and VERY rusty so I have it apart to clean and paint. I have a diagram I found on the Barn that is very helpful. My diaphram is VERY rusty. Is it OK to sand blast - if not what is the best way to clean it. Also the diagram mentions to paint "very lightly". Can I spray it lightly with Rustoleum or should it be hand painted? Any other tips or ideas greatly appreciated. Jim

If the contact point is worn, you might want to consider replacing it. I put a thin coat of oil on my diaphrams and wipe down.

sand or bead blasting diaphram is very apt to warp it. sand it by hand with 80 grit or so and paint it with a rust resistant paint (rustoleum) and do not put on on overly thick coat

Yes, the contact point on the diaphragm is what you should look at. The replacements are not too expensive and work well. I did a video on using new parts to repair a horn it is on YouTube.com/modelatimes. The other problem you might have is the electrical connections. If your connectors are weak you won't get a good connection, also if the brushes are worn out it could be a problem for you, as well as the commutator needing to be cleaned. I believe the paint was just so the diaphragm didn't rust or show up through the screen as being silver looking so rattle can a light coat there.
