Default removing outside door handle

i am wondering how much i have to remove to replace the outside door handle on a 1929 coupe. I thought you just removed the 2 screws and it came out, but it looks like some kind of clip on it or part of the lock, I was hoping I did not have to take off the door panel because it is pretty old. the screws in the door latch mech. are stuck pretty good. I just did not want to do a bunch of extra work, Thanks, Bob

Try this: Open the latch with the exterior handle. Then have somebody keep it in that position by holding the interior handle, as you wiggle, twist, and pull on the exterior handle. This worked for my S/W passenger door. It does have a different lock design, but I think the theory is similar: They wanted to make it hard to defeat the lock by simply unscrewing and removing the handle.

undo the 2 screws and turn the handle an 1/8 of a turn counter clockwise and wiggle it out. spraying some kind of a rust penetrate in behind the handle will help alot on removing it. be carefull to keep one hand on the bezel so it does not scratch your paint

push the latch in, and hold it in. this relieves the spring tension. Bob

I have been trying it several times today, soaked with kroil several times, pulled and wiggled it like hell and still don't budge. any other suggestions other than just keep trying. it is the right door outer handle on a 1929 coupe, Thanks, Bob

Were you able to roll the window down and spray Kroil down alongside the glass and onto the handle shaft? Then you should turn the handle just like you were going to open the door, and turn it 1/8 turn (45*) then push and pull and wiggle it all around as you pull out. While the handle is truned 45* can you push and pull and move the handle in and out at all? You did say both the outside screws were out, right?

the latch assembly should still be held in place by the 4 screws that hold it to the door frame. The door handle needs to be held in the open position. the 2 exterior screws that hold the bezel on the exterior of the door are taken completely out. If the handle won't jiggle loose in the open position, then you need to drive it out from the interior side of the door. I held the latch in, or have an assistant do that while you tap out the handle. I used a 8 inch long 1/4 in dia brass rod.

The spring that activates the door latch broke and I need to pull the whole thing out to replace it. Three of the four screws holding the latch to the passenger door of my 1929 Coupe are really frozen. I've used PB Blaster as a start and heated the screws briefly with a propane torch. No budge yet. I may order a new latch mechanism and can drill out the old screws as a last resort. Does someone have suggestions?

Slotted screws are such a pain! I am going to try removing the handle next. It looks like the locking entrance is boogered up, and I never had a key.

The handle came off without a problem. I squirted some more PB Blaster inside by the screws and will let it sit for a day or so.

If and when you replace your keylock handle be prepared to do some filling. The repop handles are wider than the original handle (the square shaft that fits into the lock assembly).

I had the same problem with frozen flat head screws on the latch. I used a manual impact screw driver set in the loosen (left) position with the appropriate sized flat blade. A couple of raps with the hammer and that thankfully jarred them enough to remove. Of course, I then chased the threads with a tap (10/32 I believe) and installed new replacement screws. For some reason I have always found a hammer to be my most useful Ford repair tool.
