Re: Mercury Flathead on Craigs list MN
At most, that incomplete engine is worth scrap value. Maybe more if you need parts.
Way over priced. If it was any good it wouldn't have been left outside to seize and rust away. I would pass. |

The crank is worth at least at least 2- 3 hundred.

Re: Mercury Flathead on Craigs list MN
It all depends on condition of the crank. It better be very good for that kind of money.
There's one on Ebay right now. |

Re: Mercury Flathead on Craigs list MN
"No oil pan" and the top side looks like that? There has too be a reason why the pan was removed and then the engine dumped outside. The crank would be a gamble at best.

Re: Mercury Flathead on Craigs list MN
I recently seen a running merc for $500 with transmission.
I just bought a 1951 8BA for $100, guy advertised it for $300. I shot him a offer for $100 ... I told him to go ahead and sell it, but if not sold and before throwing it in the iron pile, I would give $100. He said come get it. .... The pics of it was in the shop, when I picked it up, he already had it back in the iron pile It was stuck and I figured would be good parts. Still a crap shoot, but might end up being a good block to rebuild. IMHO, a stuck flathead, is way to iffy for $400 |

Re: Mercury Flathead on Craigs list MN
you would want the rods too, so you cant get too violent tearing down a stuck motor. whats up with those things around the spark plugs? never seen that before. new london is the home of windy hill auto parts. used to be one of the biggest antique junk yards in the country, but same old story, owner retired, kids scrapped most of it when steel was high

Re: Mercury Flathead on Craigs list MN
Agreed. A hunge, no more. If asking more, would need money back guarantee that the crank is good.

Re: Mercury Flathead on Craigs list MN
4 or 5 weeks ago, about 20 miles east of New London, a fellow that was moveing
wanted $75 for an engine described about what that one looks like. He called me a week later and said he would give me the engine if I would come pick it up. It was about 75 miles from me and I was really busy that week, so I never took the time to go after it... For Free I'm sure someone closer went after it. Oh well. Maybe this is the same engine, maybe not... .

Re: Mercury Flathead on Craigs list MN
Doesn't this say "1CM" on the counterweight? Does that not indicate '51 Merc? DD

Re: Mercury Flathead on Craigs list MN
Yes it does. Doesn't make any difference what else is on the engine.

Years ago weren't there inserts you could insert to raise the height of your spark plugs if the engine burned oil? I recall something like that was available. Look here. https://www.google.com/search?q=spar...hrome&ie=UTF-8 |

Re: Mercury Flathead on Craigs list MN
I’ve used those “no-foul” ends on an OT motor that used to foul plugs. I haven’t seen little cups like that before.......Mark

Re: Mercury Flathead on Craigs list MN
Doesn't look horribly stuck to me. The bottom end being so oily makes me think the pan was recently pulled to verify and photograph the bottom end and the fact it has a merc crank. I have had 4 merc cranks and read many books/articles describing how to tell a merc crank from a ford. I have never seen or heard of one stamped as such. That's too easy. I continue to learn.

Re: Mercury Flathead on Craigs list MN
i agree with GB, never heard of the stamp. i always thought it was the size of the clean out plug, which is not a for sure, and then measure the stroke
