Default Flywheel housing gasket

Do you have to use the gasket between the block and flywheel housing.

Yes. If not the back of the cam shaft will pour oil out into the housing and on the ground.

In addition to to what Bob said you risk cracking the two tabs that the bolts go thru.

also put a little RTV around the cam opening on the rear of the block. it helps to have a better seal. also you need to dial in the flywheel housing. they normally take one shim on each side.

It is also important that the gasket be of the proper thickness. Most are not. The two brass horseshoe shims at the ears are .010" thick. The gasket should be the same thickness after it is crushed down as the brass shims. This will allow proper alignment of the transmission input shaft. Most supplier supplied gaskets are way too thin. I make my own gasket from .015" gasket material I get from Napa.
