Oil dipstick boss
I’m having no luck finding this part. Vanpelt shows it as part number 8BA-6751 for a 1951 flathead V8. It is the potmetal piece that is attached to the oil pan by three rivets. Any suggestions?

Re: Oil dipstick boss
One caution. The holes in the bracket I got did not line up with the holes in my oil pan. I elected to drill a new hole in the bracket that lined up with the existing pan holes. You obviously need to drop the pan to install the bracket rivets. Make sure they are tightly secured so there are no leaks around the bracket gasket.

Re: Oil dipstick boss
I believe "GOSFAST" on here has a plate that goes inside the pan that allows the dipstick boss to be attached positively with machine screws. It is probably something that should be considered.

Re: Oil dipstick boss
Nice! Tack the plate to the inside of the pan and you'll never have to drop it again for future bracket issues. Wish I knew about it when I did mine.

Call Fred @ Southside Obsolete. I'm sure he'll have a NOS one. He's barnfind08 here.

These kits became so popular I can't keep them on the shelf, the last two I had Monday are heading to Alaska tomorrow for a member here. Just made a 1/2 dozen more yesterday! Thanks, Gary in N.Y. P.S. Am already looking for a vendor who may have these in stock, if I come up blank I may figure a way to make a few of them in-house here! Shouldn't be all that difficult?? Here's a couple shots again of the end product!

Re: Oil dipstick boss
I just recently got an email message from Bob Drake saying he was reproducing these oil dipstick tube mounts. The pictures included with the email show the standard version, and the version with a threaded holes for an oil return line. Not sure if the message said they were coming soon, or already available at a cost of about $32.00 each. I think gasket and rivets will be included....but I think I would go with the internal plate with three threaded holes, and SS screws, + lock washer's.

Very true. NOS is usually the best.

Re: Oil dipstick boss
This is the kit we sell to mount them. I use lock tite in the threads and the appear as Though they were riveted and will never leak. We stock the boss but they are more than the $20 Fred Wilner gets.

Re: Oil dipstick boss
Could closed end "POP" rivets be used to fasten the boss to the pan? They are liquid tight, would compress the gasket and come in all sorts of sizes. There would be no need to remove the oil pan if the engine was still in the car.

Re: Oil dipstick boss
Sheet-metal screws will also work with silicone sealer on the threads next to screw heads. Use pan-, truss- or round-head screws to look like rivets by filling slots with aluminized sealer. Jack E/NJ

Re: Oil dipstick boss
Hi,
Before reading this, this was my plan, I am going to put a horseshoe of earth magnets below the boss, grind the external head off, remove the old boss, slide the magnets to the hole removing fragments and use a closed head. My only question now is can I get a pop rivet hun in the area? Will let you know this winter when I try. |
