Default Rear end or transmission?

OK I am going to try to explain my problem.
While looking at a Model A Pickup I was thinking of purchasing
a problem came up.
I was told that when shifted into 1st, 2nd, or 3rd it would go backwards??
When shifted into reverse it would go forward.
Now this just threw me for a loop. The seller gave me (what seemed at the time) a rational explanition.
I thought the work involved was a bit much for me.

Now that I think it over, I believe I could handle redoing the rearend.
I would however like some other opions or this subject.
All thoughts and coments will be appreciated and welcom.

A normal Model A has the ring gear on the left side of the pinion gear. The pinion gear is in the center of the car. You can take the left axle housing off and pull out the entire ring gear assembly including both axles from the car.

A Model A that has three gears in reverse has the ring gear on the right side of the pinion. You would have to remove the right axle housing to remove the assembly. Whoever put the rear end together did not know which side the ring gear was supposed to be on and put it together wrong.

If it were mine I would pull the rear end and tear it down and start all over. Chances are that the person also did not know about pre-load and back lash, and also could have done things like replacing the bearings and not the races or seals.

Tom's right, the ring gear goes on the left side of the car. The main expense is your time, assuming the rear axle parts are still o.k. This would be a good time to check everything though, as the entire rear axle assembly will need to be taken apart. If you were otherwise considering purchasing this truck, I wouldn't let that stop me from tendering an offer. Good luck regardless whatever you decide.

Of course, before you start all this, you need to tell the present owner how much his truck is screwed up and how you could take it off his hands and see what could be done with it...especially since it's worth absolutely nothing to him as it is... Then offer him a couple hundred to help relieve him of his misery and prevent him from just throwin' money into a truck that was obviously seriously flawed...and so on...

In short...this could work out quite well for you...
