Guys,

One of my customers was in the shop today and informed me that both the Peking to Paris rally and the Motorcycle Cannonball start tomorrow. I was familliar with the Peking to Paris event but the motorcycle deal was news to me. I Googled it when I got home and its a cross country rally for pre-1916 motorcycles, which I know are of interest to at least a few of you guys. And if that's not cool enough, they're having a lunch stop in my town next Tuesday! Just thought some of you guys would enjoy checking it out.

My buddy bought a 1915 Harley about a year ago. He rebuilt the engine, trans, wheels and alot of other maintence and shipped it out last week to the start of the rally. He is there now and going on the ride. Kitty Hawk to santa monica. Sounds like a really good ride. And nothing newer than a 1916. A long time in the saddle on an old bike but a once in a lifetime ride.
If i could get away i would take my 03 Harley and just ride along but i am heading back to Bonneville next week for the FIA meet, so i guess my Harley ride will have to wait.

I was in Davenport Iowa Over the weekend, and I saw several of the cannonballers. I took my 1913 Excelsior single cylinder belt drive, but I found out about it to late to get my bike ready for a trip like that. I have a 1919 Indian powerplus that's ready, but it's too new. Isn't that a shame.....a 91 year old motorcycle, and it's "TOO NEW". Their going to stop in Hot Springs Arkansas for an overnight stay, so I'm going to try to be there so I can visit with some friends of mine who are entered in the ride. Should be a real Kodak moment.

Be on the lookout for my friend Jim Dennie. He restored an extremely rare in line four cylinder motorcycle called a Militaire (1915). Unusual m/c, wooden artillery wheels and a car style gear shift.

Stan, i think i heard some where that they might raise the year to 1921 or 1926 so maybe you can enter your Indian next year. Sounds like you got a couple of nice bikes. Mark.

Is there any chance your friend would be able to find out the exact route they're taking? The main highway from Chattanooga runs right in front of my shop ( I get to sit in my front yard and watch the Trail of Tears ride every year) but I doubt they're going to travel such a busy road. I'd love to be able to set up on the side of the road and photograph them coming through! Unfortunately, if its like the Great Race was they won't tell the participants anything about the route ahead of time.

We were just talking over the cubicle walls here at the office...we might take off next Friday and try to ride with them a while as they come up from Tupelo, MS...around Memphis....and across one of the Mississippi bridges here in Memphis. Hope the organizers know one of the bridges is undergoing some seismic work and there's only one lane open in either direction! Wouldn't that be a mess..? They could always go through Helena...but I can't seem to find a step-by-step map that definatively lays out a route...just a list of stops. From Tupelo and Lula...the route to Stuttgart, Arkansas, can take one through Helena, AR, or Memphis, TN.

I'll post some pictures if we make the ride... Here's my bike, BTW...

I know what you mean about the GR route as I had to do a bunch of detective work and speeding to keep ahead of the Splinter Box in 2006, but did get some great pic's. Rod

ZZ, you heard correctly. I expect it may be pre-1930, up to 1929. Fifteen or so bikes have already been scratched due to mechanical issues or could not be completed in time.

Thanks ZZ...it's been a ball to customize my V-Rod... I've got a set of chromed sliders I need to install, and a street scraper front fender...should look great when it's finished...but, are they ever "finished"...?

There are a lot of pictures oh Slojoe's ground up restoration of a rusty hulk of a 1914 Harley-Davidson into a gleaming Cannonball participant. Joe made all the parts for the bike that needed replacing himself. Pictures of his work start on page 3.

Looks like about 1/2 are out of the race at the end of the stage 2.
