Default Another question about wood.

So, further to my previous post about White Oak vs Ash, it turns out I will be doing with white oak. The supplier has WO in the size I need for the main sills and it is only $1.50 more per board foot than the ash. So, my next question, should the wood be treated with anything?. I'm thinking something like Thompsons water seal perhaps. Thoughts?.

Here is a picture of the wood rear sill of my Victoria. The car is black and the body was made by Murray. The wood has black paint on it and I think that it was painted after the body was assembled. I would probably paint your wood the lower body color of your vehicle.

I think it is really a "peace of mind" issue for you. Maybe depending a bit on where your car is stored. If you put a preservative on the WO it will only penetrate a very, very small way. The end grain will soak it up well but the rest of the piece will almost reject the preservative. But, do what makes you satisfied. On my large schooner I used boiled linseed oil in the weather areas. Be careful as it remains tacky for quite a while.

I watched a video of a man who made a wooden watering tank for livestock. After he finished, he complained that the customer requested the tank be painted, he said the paint will hold the moisture in the wood and it would rot. When I helped built a pole barn, the post where set on concrete and gravel around the post. This is done so the post can let moisture out and not rot!
