1930 Model A - Utah
Assuming I can find a business willing to change the engine oil, transmission fluid, differential and grease all fittings, what fluids do I specify? Thus far, all places have declined.

Not everyone is able to get under and crawl around on the floor. Not everyone has a lift or the ability to raise the vehicle. Not everyone has the tools either, ...so sometimes it IS hard to do.


My advice to the O/P is to order all of your materials and have them on-hand before you start the job. Most Model-A vendors will carry the 600W used in the transmission and rear axle. Any good quality engine oil will suffice. Then find a local shop (-or even a mobile mechanic repair biz) that is willing to work on Time & Materials since they do not know how to charge for flat-rate on this vehicle. It might be best to have them drain and refill the rear axle assembly and transmission. Have them add lube to the steering gearbox. While you are ordering the 600W, many vendors carry a lubrication chart. Order one to assist in locating grease fittings. Hope this helps some.

Why use anything but the newest, most improved fluids? Use modern fluids, 80-90 in the trans & diff, Your choice on engine oil, I use 20/50 but strait 30wt. or anything in between is acceptable.
Use their chassis grease. Their gun may not work well on grease fittings, but can be used with a little effort.

Make sure your man does not over-pump grease into the rear wheel bearing fittings found behind the rear backing plates at bottom. Excess grease will get in your brake shoes.

Need a place with drive on rack.

The place that I used let me bring all oil needed including Corn Head grease for u-joint in my hand gun.

They charged me $50.00 to do all the work including greasing the chassis.

Have done it this way for years. You can get a good look at the underside of your car also.

If you have not yet done this, find and join the local Model A Ford Club. It is a certainty that you will find a club member to help you.
As for lubricants, go modern with 10W30 motor oil, GL4 of GL5 gear lube in transmission and differential, and a good quality wheel bearing grease for a that needs greasing.

there is a bit more to a complete lube on a model A as compared to modern car.
in most of the model A repair manuals there is a lube chart that tell were the points of lube are and the type of lube used.

yes. if you are unable to do it yourself find a club and someone there will know a mechanic who can help and maybe even help you do it yourself.
