Default Front axle repair or replacement

I bought a 1930 Model A from my aunt, and in the process of working through the brakes in the front end, I discovered a LOT of play in the perch pin. Digging in a bit more, I found that the perch pin nut had been sloppy for so long, that it turned the round hole in axle into more of an oval.

Is it possible to pull the axle and have some re-sleeve it? if not, does anyone sell new axles? I've looked online (briefly) and none of the suppliers I've used sell them.

A picture of the discrepant hole would help a lot. If you are talking about the king pin pin lock bolt, it is tapered so putting a bushing into it will be very difficult. Find a better axle.

I should’ve been more clear. It’s the perch pinhole in the axle, which is definitely tapered. Where would you suggest I start looking for a new axle?

I have one that I was going to use, but I sold the car. It’s not new, but it looks very good to me. My king pin hole were oval. How to ship an axle?

If the perch has been loose in the axle the wishbone will be worn where the perch fits too

Watch for a complete axle assy. The extra parts WILL come in handy sooner or later. Probably not much different in price.

Sorry I got behind on this. I've been focusing on my plane lately, and now that it has some momentum, I'm back to this.

I live in northern california.

Since shipping is so expensive put a wanted ad in the local Model A clubs newsletters. PM me with your email if you need some contact numbers.

I had the same problem with my 29 fordor . The hole in the axle was no doubt oval and the hole in the radius rod was very worn as well . It would not be economic to repair these as they seem fairly available at swap meets (ex rodders i would guess). So both parts are junk more or less . I discreetly MIG welded the radius rod end to the axle which was an instant cure and the backside repair is hardly noticeable . One day maybe I will replace them .

at this point, I've procrastinated sooo long in actually fixing this and getting on with the front end, I'm not particularly concerned with shipping costs. :/

I just want to start getting her put back together.

And while I'm here, why is so dang hard to get a replacement axle? Is there something especially strange about these things. Seems like you can get any other part of the car.

"why is so dang hard to get a replacement axle" I would say to cost to manufacture a new unit , to the tolerance needed is pretty high, and with the cost high and demand low for a new one it would not be something the vendors would take on.. With all the good used ones around they a easy to come by. Most swap meets have a few and I would venture if you contacted a local club they could fix you up. best of luck...
