Small 1927 Number Pad on 1928 # Engine
I picked up this engine from a seller in Canada. Overall, I'm exceptionally pleased with it (it appears to be very rebuildable) but more importantly, it has a 2-inch number pad...but has a June 1928 production number.
I vaguely recall reading that Ford "recycled" some engine blocks. Could this be the case with this one, made in 1927 but actually reaching the production line six-ish months later? The engine appears to have been stored in a barn for God-knows-how-long, but I'll clean the number pad off and see if there are any other marks around it. The second photo is the comparison between this pad and a LOWER-numbered Canadian engine with the correct pad length for the time. Open to any ideas. Thanks! Dave

Ford of Canada was independent in it's production. The had their own foundry so they did a lot of things different. This link to Vince's site has Canadian information and some photos.
https://www.fordgarage.com/pages/ABenginenumbers.htm#C5 They may have used earlier type cores for several months before changing them. There may also be a possibility of a replacement engine too which may have had an older number on a later block. Last edited by rotorwrench; 02-03-2023 at 03:39 PM. |

I agree that they may have still been using their earlier pattern to make the molds. Only a study of CA serial numbers could tell if they were using both sizes at the same time. I can't find images of CA ones with a google search.

Here are two Canadian engines with lower numbers, CA16472 and CA10988. Both have the larger pad, appropriate for post-December 1927 engines.
