Default 1946-48 Car Vin Number Location Variation?

Been searching for the vin under the hood on the left frame rail on a 46 ford coupe. Took a look at the other coupe that I have and its right next to the front cross member. I've done some searching on here and other websites. Did ford put vin numbers where ever the worker wanted to put them or was it suppose to be a mandatory spot? I've seen people say next to the core support to just in front of the cowl. thanks!

Wherever they felt like it for the day or hour or whatever! They are all over the place. The front one should be between the cowl and the front cross-member the center one around the A pillar and the rear one around the hump-up for the rear spring. Attached is from VanPelt. I have had a very hard time finding the numbers on a lot of bare frames.

JSeery is spot on.
The "forward" placement was supposed to be stamped near the cross member. In reality they were stamped somewhere between the cowl and the cross member.

My 46 is stamped on the frame rail where the steering box mounts. It was completely invisible until I went to town with some gas and scotch bright and still had a heck of a time....

It is stamped on the left frame rail near the steering box mount on my 46 frame and the spare frame I have.

Found it yesterday. In between the radiator and front cross member. Thanks for the input everyone! I was curious to know if they were in different locations.
