Default Comparing 52 and 53 Mercurys

A discussion on facebook concerning the differences between 1952 and 53 Mercs inspired me to shoot some video of mine showing all the minor differences I could find. If I missed any, blame it on the cold. It was around 0 degrees at the time and my hands got a bit cold.

Ralph thanks for the tour, my Dad had a '53 two door, black with a red-orange roof, sharp looking car when it was all polished up. He towed a boat with his, I remember all four of us kids climbing in the back seat to go to the lake, trunk full of picnic supplies, on the way home my Mom would hang our swim suits from the antenna to dry. Ah the memories.

That does sound like a flashy paint job on your dad's Merc. I wish I had some pictures from when our family was at the Qu'appelle lakes with the Merc in the 1960s. Parking was all downhill facing the lake and the old Mercomatic used to struggle to back up the hill to turn around.

Took me a while to find my way back there but I think this link should take you to the post on the 52-54 Ford/Mercury/Lincoln facebook page.

Thank you for freezing to entertain us with this video. Really enjoyed seeing the differences between the two years. Down to the small details. Always love to learn this type stuff.

Does anyone have a part number for the terminal block covers?

There does not seem to any consistent rule to which 52 and 53 cars have those junction block covers. I have watched several videos on youtube and some have them, some don't.

Ralph, I studied your video, but couldn't recognize anything to clear up my foggy memory of my parents Merc, I believe to have been a '54: It had a feature I know was original to that car, but I've never seen another, having a simulated Sun Valley roof, painted green forward of a trim strip across the top, effectively making it a 3 tone paint job. I've always wondered what that model was, as obviously, it wasn't a Sun Valley!

That sounds like a newer than 54 model as I have not seen that pattern on any that I've looked at in my vintage ads. Closest I found was this 55 Meteor Crown Victoria (same as a Ford) with the chrome strip over the roof. I have not seen that on a Mercury other than the glass top Sun Valley.
