I'd encourage you to join the Club! I belong to 2 Model A Clubs, and 1 old car Club. Lots of fun touring, and the members have a lot of knowledge.

Maybe once I retire right now I have to schedule in time on my calendar just to work on my car doesn't leave much time for a club.

OK so back to the motors the main reason I asked about the serial numbers is I am curious about the insert engines. How long under average conditions will a insert engine last and is Bert's one of the best? I am nervous about inserts I'm my original block but I would buy one that was done and have it stamped.

In short does he do good work and what is the life expectancy and what kind of maintenance do they take?

I have an insert engine that was built in the early '90's and still going strong. Put out 60 HP at the rear wheels. My Bert's babbit engine is just as strong. Having done business with Steve for at least 25 years, he does do good work. Don't understand the concern with serial numbers. Most states use the frame number when registering an A.

The frame was replaced after and accident in 92 turned it into scrap metal and all that I have is the motor serial number to tie it to the title not really an issue for me but for my son down the road

Is this true? How does the state verify the frame number? How do most Model A owners even know the frame number unless they personally have had the body off?

When I built the last two A's, I had the Highway Patrol do a VIN check using the frame number when the body was off. Since I've replaced several engines, the engine number is immaterial. I have an A powered hot rod that has a state issued VIN as the frame is custom. So, again, the engine number doesn't matter.

Any time the body is off the frame, it would be a good time to make a pencil etching of the number, and also take a picture of the number, and keep them with the car.

I made a pencil etching of my engine number and took a picture of it also, then used those plus pictures of the car to get a new title made for two of my Model A's.

When I registered my Pickup right after I bought it, it had valid CA plates & title (aka: Pink). DMV here in Alaska just took all the info off the CA pink, no inspection, no nothing. Just ~$200 and I was on my way with my new Alaska Collector Car plates.

I did checked the engine serial number on the block (which was an obvious re-stamp anyway) against the CA pink, but DMV didn't.

Now that I have changed the engine & the SN boss is blank, don't know what anyone would check. I have never taken the cab off to inspect the frame #, so I have no idea whether it matches or not. I guess someday I should stamp the title # on the engine.

I keep thinking of the quote from Walter Scott:
Quote:
O, what a tangled web we weave when first we practise to deceive!
Even though there is no intent to deceive, it seems as though it is.

Wasn't my intention to hijack this thread about serial numbers. I did have a follow-up up about the longevity of a insert motor and also about maintenance of the bearings.
How many miles can you go before needing g a rebuilt?
