Default Shifter Spring and Rotation?

Brian T's shifter spring question reminds me...

--> Is it true that the shifter itself can be pulled up against the spring and rotated [180 deg? or 90 deg?] and let back down for additional passenger room with three people in the front? So that puts the stick facing foward or to the side?

I heard that from a guy who has owned his 1929 Roadster since 1931. He bought it as a kid. So that's 79 years. Here is his car. He and his girlfriend [his wife passes away] just motored out and back from Sturgeon Bay to Wisconsin Rapids. The car has an overdrive in it. I guess he does too.

Yes, it can be done, but can be tricky to get back correctly, as the small end will disengage from the shift forks. Better to let the center passenger do the shifting.
