Re: tube shock kits
You might have a problem with the front shocks on a Mercury. My old aftermarket kit would not fit due to the inner fenders. They came from a friends 47 Ford where they worked fine. Most if not all of the new kits available today will not work with a Ford or Mercury stock front end. The new ones are for the street rods. Chassis Engineering is one vendor sells the new kits.

Re: tube shock kits
I've used the kit from Pete & Jakes on Fords but never had a Merc.

Re: tube shock kits
I was told a while back that if you used the older tube shock kits on some of the cars you needed a 1/2 spacer between the frame and braket to clear the inner fenders. Does this look like it would work on yours? Marv

Re: tube shock kits
Check with C and G Parts in Escondido, Ca. They sell the tube shock kits and can tell you if they fit the Merc.

Re: tube shock kits
The 1942 Ford And Mercury inner fender aprons were made without a recess in the apron that would give the proper clearance to use tube type shocks. In the 1947-48 Ford cars, the inner apron stamping was changed by adding a bulge or recess that would allow clearance for the new type tube shocks. Most often a person wishing to replace his lever action shocks with tube shocks would get a large hammer and modify the inner apron as needed. If you want it to look stock , I would suggest you look for some 47-48 inner aprons with the recessed stamping.

Re: tube shock kits
An alternative solution is look for race car shocks.
They can be had in many different mounting ends, compression and rebound ratios. Very cheap on Ebay. |

Re: tube shock kits
There were some aftermarket front shock kits that will fit what you want to do, but you will need to make a 1/2-3/4" thick spacer to clear the inner fender. I'm using them on my 42 merc project. The bottom of the shock bolts to the wishbone bolt, where the lever shock did. They show up on ebay every so often & at swap meets.
