Default '40 Fuel Pump

Et al......

A couple of years ago when I bought my '40...it only had an electric fuel pump. I bought a mechanical pump (cannot remember from who) and the car ran very well and just used the electric for priming or an emergency, etc. Well...after about a year and a half I had an emergency...the pump let loose and there was fuel all over the place. Lucky for me I was not far from home and was able to make it on the electric pump. With all that said....I don't know where I bought the mechanical pump, but was wondering where I could buy another new one that has a proven long term record. I use recreational fuel up here in Northern Michigan, so I don't think it's a fuel problem. I've seen mentioned on here of a Barner who rebuilds pumps or sells them outright.

Comments please.

Thx....Mike

I purchased an Airtex #571 from Advance Auto Parts six years ago, and it's still going strong.

Pumps are available from most parts stores like, NAPA, AutoZone, C&G and many more. Or contact CharlieNY here on the barn he'll help you out....LouB.

Thx guys.....it was the mechanical that went out and not the electric. I wasn't clear in what I typed. I got the electrical pump from NAPA and so far works very well. It's a Carter.

The mechanical pump was new, but I just can't remember who I bought it from. ie, Mac's, C & G, Drake's, etc. Just looking for someone here that may rebuild them into a quality-long lasting unit.

Thx...Mike

Try charlie ny, here on the barn. He makes his own diaphrams from an impervious material that isn't affected by the corn gas.
What's recreational gas?

Could be marine gas with no alcohol.

Some of the new fuel pumps coming from the big suppliers mentioned in previous posts on this thread produce more pressure than the carburetor can handle.

Howard....Recreational Fuel is made by Marathon Oil in Michigan. It costs about 50¢ more per gallon though. I've had good success over the years. It does not adhere to current fuel standards. I use it in my boat, tractor, '40 Ford, all my other power tools, etc.

Cecil....you bought a '40 Pump at NAPA ?

Thx guys.

Mike42, yes.. most parts stores have those fuel pumps. They also replace them if they crap out in within a certain time. You may have to order, or find a person that can actually look them up, but they have them in the catalogs. Or call CharlieNy he'll set you up....LouB.

Are there any changes in the fuel pump between the years 40 thru 48?

46-48 pumps have a glass sediment bowl, but work fine on 40's.
