Huh??? On ANY warm, dry day there will be dust on any road. Henry built the Model A as cheaply as he could. An air cleaner only prolonged the life of the engine, a benefit not realised till well after the car had been sold so not of much benefit to him Adding one would add to his expenses - something he fought hard to avoid.
I ask "If air cleaners are so useless, why does every modern car have one??"Same with oil filter. I agree that the wiere mesh type air "stainer" is near useless. I run a paper element filter mounted on the radiator stays and wouldn't consider going without one. It is very difficult to install any air filter because of the steering column. Very poor design.

Like Ernie, I also use the K&N filter and I drilled a couple of very small holes in the bottom in case gas filled up in there.

Coat the wire mess by soaking it in oil and letting it drip, then install it. Oil traps and holds the dirt until you rinse it out in kerosene.

Thoise things are as useless as flyscreens for a submarine. They CANNOT be fitted here. The steering column is in the way and I'd prefer steering!

Not sure what you feel is worthless as a fly screen. This is a K&N air filter installed with an air maze housing, the original screen is not used.

And yes this is not suitable for a RH drive Model A due to the steering box interference.

Here are my K&N filters. RHD car so I fabricated right angle adaptors at full cross section out of sheet metal as shown in the third pic.
Some (most or Many???) say they are ugly. The oil filter certainly is. I think the more upturned one is cheekily cute! They catch a lot of dirt even on tarsealed roads. And I still get the same 22 to 24 mpg (larger imperial gallons) on a trip at 55 to 60 mph.

PS I just noticed the glass filter bowl in the second pic is half full of water. I had a faulty tank cap, since fixed!

How come the K&N on my Model A gets FILTHY??? I usually have my engine pans on also. K&N I use. You will have to extend the Air Maze rod.

If you use a WIX filter they don't show as much as they are painted black. Or paint your white one black or Ford green.

Y-Blockhead, the ones like yours that point down are not as ugly either. I have not found the correct adaptor in NZ so far. Plus I am always in a hurry to fit a new filter and get going. I forget to paint them and wait for them to dry. Plus again a vertical one can be filled right up before running. I can only fill mine about 2/3 full before fitting.
Then again oil pressure registers within seconds of start up on a new filter on my gauge.
When I get back to NZ I will make a concerted effort to find 2 right angle adaptors for my oil filters............maybe.

SAJ, I think vendors sell the adaptor you want. That said, I have grafted in right angled adaptors from other cars before today.

I've seen Argentina cars, with home made plumbing & an Early Ford Oil Bath air cleaner, mounted at the right front of the engine

It was tired of being teased by the other Model A's and ran away.
