Default What are these wheels?

Artillery type. Got the axle from a place where I was buying a load of salvaged lumber for a project.

Back in the 50's I had a complete set of those on a Model A pickup. I think they were made by General Tire.

Could they be the jumbos? They feel kind of wide reaching around the rubber. The axle pipe is a piece of galvey water pipe, so not a regular trailer axle. Tomorrow I will find out if they are ford pattern and they are 16" wheels and currently 6.00 x 16s.

They look similar to a set I used to own that were fitted to a Model A but the cap area looks more raised on the wheels above...

Now you have to build a car to use them and then go out and find another pair to match...

I have one and have had more in the past. Mine had the indent on the mounting surface for the nubs on a pre-36 hub. So you know they were made for old Fords. I guessed they were made by an early aftermarket, but I don't know who.

Gary - I've got a 1935 Kelsey Hayes color advertisement folder, a 1938 color dealer marketing package, and a 1941 color fold out parts listing that show they were aftermarket "change-over" wheels. As the country was coming out of the Great Depression there emerged a market for stylish wheels. It could be that the other primary companies, Budd and Motor Wheel, also offered similar wheels. My records are for K-H. Stu

They have 13 'spokes'. The General jumbos have 11 from what I see on google images. I have 2 more similar wheels but they are a funny 5 lug like 5 on 6" but look a lot alike. On another note I just got back from driving the woodie to visit a friend about 3 miles away.

I have encountered similar wheels, we bought five wheels from a junk yard in Idaho that were very similar, with a 5 on 5.5 bolt pattern, which is Ford and Mopar. A lot of research turned up a listing for Motor Rim during the mid thirties, the brochure called the rims "Sun Burst", they were an original orange color with faint pin stripping on the spokes, rim was 15x6.5.. My friend put them on his RAT Rod.
I think the style of the wheel indicts that they were intended for large cars, Chrysler, etc. and or pickups/station wagons..
Several years ago I had a '36 International 1/2 ton that had similar wheels.

Go back and count them again. I count 7 on the top half which makes 14 total.

You win on the recount, Pete! I just counted 14 spokes. Now I just need 2 more! Or I put them on my old box trailer.

The much sought after "bent spoke KH wheels have 14 spokes. Each long spoke crosses two others. Motor wheel is easily mistaken for KH but each long spoke only crosses one other long spoke. Close, but no cigar.
