28-29 Rear Bumperette rivets
I removed the old plate and rivets that hold the two bars of the rear bumperette together. I have the replacement kit with new plate and rivets but I am looking for advice on how to set the new rivets. I was hoping to use a cupped bit in my pheumatic hammer but the largest bit available is only has a 3/8" cup. The new rivet diameter is 3/8" but the head is nearly 5/8". A torch and peening hammer will work but it wont look anything like original. Any suggestions?

David,
May I ask you why you had to remove the plate in the first place? Pluck |

The plates were badly rusted. The black painted rear bumpers were only on early 28 wernt they? All the ones I have seen were all chrome, including the plate and rivets.

Tom and Steve,
I plan to do the same thing as David. Never thought much about it,..but since the subject is here, I'm now thinking. I'll make my own tooling and finish it in the 100 TON press next door. A fixture for holding them in alignment will probably be necessary. |

Re: 28-29 Rear Bumperette rivets
I would leave the plate rivets in place and sandblast the end and paint it black. The factory dipped the bumper ends into black paint to a point midway between the two curves. So the plate plus about 2 1/4" should be black.

Thanks for the comments, but the rivets are already out.
Anyone out there successfully installed new rivets? |
