Fuel Pump leak after Rebuild
I just rebuilt my fuel pump due to an issue with diaphragm deterioration. It was flaking off and plugged one of the jets in the carb. I used a Napco rebuild kit. Since rebuild, the pump has leaked. The best I can tell, it leaks at the diaphragm, not the fuel line. If I tighten the screws it will stop, but after several days the leak returns and I have to retighten the screws. I am going to remove the screws and add some loctite 577 to the threads. Pump never leaked before. Just wondered if anyone had this issue in the past. Luckily I have access to non-ethonal gas locally and that's all I run. Just wondered if I'm missing something here.

Re: Fuel Pump leak after Rebuild
Looking at your pictures, I can’t tell if there are lock washers under the screw heads. I’ve used them on my pump.

Re: Fuel Pump leak after Rebuild
Those 10-32 cap screws are good for one use....minimal head thickness. Many
vintage pumps used larger diameter lock washers or 10-32 phil head screws with larger diameter heads. Either style spreads the force over a bigger area. I save these fasteners when I find them. I would try disassembling the pump and touching the gasket faces on a disc sanding machine to eliminate the distortion that inevitably happens with over tightening. Charlie ny |

Re: Fuel Pump leak after Rebuild
Thanks Gentlemen, Yes there are lock washers under the screws. This pump is a Bob Drake reproduction that was on the car when I purchased it. I will disassemble and sand the gasket surfaces. Thanks Charlie.

Re: Fuel Pump leak after Rebuild
With pot metal stuff like a fuel pump housing I always true them up with fine sandpaper on a flat surface like a table saw etc. Similar to what charlie said above. you would be surprised how much they are warped. Do the mounting flange too
