Antique Grease Fittings
My new to me 29 Model A has all antique style grease fittings. I am going to keep them original but is their any tips or tricks I should know about them? I am asking because I have not yet got an adapter for my grease gun.
My first thought is that they may be harder to grease. Thanks Ron |

Re: Antique Grease Fittings
most of the Model A suppliers have an adapter for your grease gun that is made for the old style fittings.

Re: Antique Grease Fittings
Here is an idea, Why not use an original grease gun, type that came with your car ?? (They generate plenty of pressure & work amazingly well !)

They can be harder to grease. You need to maintain good pressure on the fitting when you pump the grease gun. If you don’t, you’ll just make a mess on top of the fitting. I prefer zerk fittings. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Re: Antique Grease Fittings
If you find one of these old altemite grease guns you will find the original fittings easier and quicker to service than modern fittings, only one hand needed

If you have a zerk that wont take grease gently warm the zerk and the area with a torch to soften any hardened grease to get things moving.

Re: Antique Grease Fittings
Be aware that not all those fitting had check valves, so back pressure can push the grease back out.

Re: Antique Grease Fittings
Every time you push the handle a shot of grease is injected, very quick to do all the fittings, one hand to wipe the dirt off other to grease, though i would use a modern fitting for U-joint and different grease in that gun, there the modern fitting is easier

Re: Antique Grease Fittings
And may allow water/dirt in. I use the modern type with the plastic cap. Keeps the zerk clean and since it is black is somewhat invisible.

I just took you advise and picked up an old Altemite 6B grease gun on e-bay. Will this gun allow me to hit the U Joint or will I need to get a different gun for this? I would like to keep all fittings original if possible. Thanks in advance for all your help. Ron Last edited by Model A Ron; 03-20-2021 at 11:17 PM. |

Re: Antique Grease Fittings
I had some free time tonight so I decided to try my antique Altemite 6B gun. At first it did not work as it had some hardened grease in the tip but after a little cleaning it was amazing. Far simpler than a modern grease gun and a joy to use. Let's just say I will never consider taking the old antique fittings off my 29 Phaeton and I actually look forward to greasing the hole car when I get it on my lift.
My hat is off to Mr. Kurt in NJ.....Thank you Sir for the great tip. Ron |
