Re: 1953 ford 6cyl timing
I'm not totally familiar with this distributor, but I don't see a ground wire to the points. 12264 in the first photo I believe. It may be connected to the other screw on your distributor, not sure how much difference that would make.

Re: 1953 ford 6cyl timing
The points ground themselves to the distributor. When the wire from the coil is grounded it will charge the coil. When the points open the coil discharges creating the spark. If you put a test light on the coil post with the wire going to the dist you will see it light up when the points open and go off when the close. This is because the current like the path of least resistance, which is ground. If that is happening and the point gap looks correct then go to the condenser.
you put on a new cap so you also need to make sure the wires coincide with the firing order. Here is also a problem in an 8ba distributor. the wire in the distributor chafes and the insulation comes off and it gets grounded. This is below the dist plate.

Re: 1953 ford 6cyl timing
The clip is laying at the 4:00 position in both pictures. It belongs on the shaft to hold the rotor tightly. Without the clip yours must feel loose on the shaft.
The sixes have timing marks on the crank pulley. Find TDC feeling the compression stroke thee line up the marks. The rotor position will be at #1. The firing order is 1 5 3 6 2 4. rotation is clockwise. Point gap is .024 - .026. Set them when the points are opened by the cam lobe. To Frank Millers point be sure to check the wire from the coil to the points. That is a rather common problem due to movement of the breaker plate.

Re: 1953 ford 6cyl timing
Thanks for the update. And now you probably know more about ignition systems than you planned on.
