Re: 1947 mercury brake issue?
I haven't seen the brake system on a Merc. but the way the back plate is setting doesn't look right. My 48 Ford had the wheel cyl. at the top, and emergency brake cable on the bottom. Could the back plate be installed wrong? That could cause some problems. Al

Does this look better to you? LOL The jack stand should give you a hint. It does look like the drum is locating to far inboard. (Deleted incorrect comment!!)

Re: 1947 mercury brake issue?
If the drum is seating too far inboard, that has nothing to do with the bearing. That drum HUB seating is determined by the axle's taper/hub fitment. DD

Re: 1947 mercury brake issue?
Strange that there would be a groove there that leaves that ridge on the outer edge of the lining. The inner side of the drum usually is flat all the way across. Also; noticed there appears to be some pretty thick shims between the shoe and the lining. Have you measured the ID on the drums.
Going back to your problem; any more details? Do any of the brakes get hot while driving, does the brake pedal (and master cyl) return fully, what made you pull this particular drum? |

So am I to understand that the problem shows up when you depress the clutch pedal?

Re: 1947 mercury brake issue?
If the brakes are getting hot and drag while driving; but seem properly adjusted when cool, I would check that the return spring is good and that the brake pedal is returning all the way and that there is slight play between the push-rod and master cylinder. If that seems right, also check that the master cylinder piston itself is actually returning fully.
Those shims between the shoe and the lining; would still make me interested to check that the drums aren't oversize. |

Re: 1947 mercury brake issue?
If i'm understanding what is going on, there is a groove at the back in the drum where something is rubbing. My 41 Ford is doing the same thing, but the shoes do not show any sign's of rubbing. If it were shoe contact, there should be some sign on the shoe. I had the drums turned and the machinist hit the back and made it look the same as before. Did you have the drums turned?

Re: 1947 mercury brake issue?
How wide are your brake shoes, 1 3/4 or 2 in?
Compare this with the width of the machined brake shoe width of your drums. |
