Default 32 Ford front brake drum and hubs

I have the type that someone told me are known as Rocky Mountain brakes. Hub and drum are cast together as a unit. The drum part is out at the end of five spokes. the bearing are the same as other Hubs. Anyone making these and how far out can these be cut without being illegal? It's a 12 inch drum and the shoes look normal.

"rocky mountain" is really a brand name for the after market cast iron brake drums to replace the stamped steel ones on the model A. they looked similar. yours are factory 32 34 style drums. no new ones being made, and good used ones getting hard to find

I got them on a 31 coupe I bought which had one steel and on cast iron //drum on the back. I bought four Andy Gross drums and had some old hubs to put them on, then one day jacked up the car and discovered I had 32 front brakes using the 31 backing plates. Was like having power brakes on the car, well not quite. Then I read in late 31 the A had those hub/drums in the 11 inch brakes. I never knew that before. Now I'd like to put the 32"s back on the 31 with replacement hub/drums. Thanks for the responses.

You'll have to replace the backing plates and shoes as well as '32-'34 brakes are 1" larger in diameter.

The parts are all on hand. Just the drums may be too far oversize to be legal. They work with the A brake actuator using everything past that 32. The arm just has a cant to it.

i have always heard of folks putting the 32-35 brakes on the front of an A, and have the stuff to do it myself. i'm sure a search at the A side of the barn will tell more. let us know how you come out

I had a misprint in an entry above. I had 32 front brakes on a 31 A, using 31 baking plates and brakes but using the 31 actuating arms. That works fine and I may go back to the 32's if I can scare up a good pair of drums. The reverse the braking from more braking in the rear to the front doing the most braking. That works fine for me and is more what the modern vehicles do now. I still have all the 32 parts to go back, but with all new brakes on the car it stops well now with stock 31 brakes. Thanks for the comments.

If you had 32 (12") drums, you must have had 32 backplates and brakes also. All model A drums are 11".

This was pointed out by David above, but you have repeated your statement after, so it seems you may not have "got it".

The fitment of 32 brakes on model As is a relative common upgrade.

When I say 32 I mean 32-34 as they are all the same. To fit the brakes on an A you have to mix and match the 32/A levers etc, nd maybe modify the perches. I have not done it myself so am a bit unsure on exactly what you need to do.

Mart.
