Default oversize 19" tires on A rims

thinking about trying some 600 or even 650 19s on my A rims for my speedster. I don't want to switch out to 16 inch rims as I like the tall look. anyways my question is, has any of you guys tried this big of oversize on stock A rims? it has 525-550s on it now

Front tires will hit your mechanical brake rods on tight turns.

Hi Beater,

You may like to here what the technicians at Coker Tire have to say about your specific larger tire questions for a speedster.

Never fun to spend lots of money to find you were just a guinea pig artist who later reported his test was not successful ........ especially when we have experienced Model A tire technicians who may have answers.

Wonderful to see you find it exciting to try new things you never tried before.

believe once you go over 550 the tires wont seat properly.

never heard anyone able to go that wide. On the killbillet forum, guys have "created" double wide rims................
but as Doug said.

GL!

Probably a reason that Ford finally settled on 16 inch and kept that for over a decade.

A guy in our club is putting 650x19 radials on his pickup. Hasn't run them yet, but the tires he took off were 650x19 bias ply Firestone tires. He had about 20,000 miles on them without a problem.

I'm in the process of putting 550x19 radials on my pickup. I just felt that 550 was as large as I wanted to go.

I did have a look today and you are right, the 525-550s touch the brake rods on tight turn. I'm tempted to bend in the arm . cantsee how it would affect brakeing

bend the brake arm? or rod? either way your gonna need more input from your foot to do the same job.(ie loose brake power unless you stomp it harder)

if you bend a rod a portion of the total force your applying is tryign to straighten the brake rod as you brake - if its straight your transfering maximum force along the brake rod.

the arm can be felt in this way: if you have a swivel head rachet try to break a bolt loose keeping the handle perpendicular to the bolt head (non bent brake arm) and see how much force it takes to loosten it. now do the same test with the handle swiveled at 45*. going to take alot more force to do the same job for multiple reasons: one being the fact if its bent youve effectively shortened the brake arm due to it being closer to the brake shaft and other like before not all of the total force is being used.

I would
never bend the rod, as this wouldn't work you would just straighten it when applying brake preasure.

I was thinking of putting a little S bend into the arm to move it inward a bit. yes true it would shorten it and there would be more force needed to apply the same amount of breaking preasure I understand that. other than that I cant see how this would hurt anything ? I could also get another set of arms and cut them both long, weld them together, then bend them over and end up at the same height as the original

You'll want to make sure the force/brake ratio stays the same as original or your from/back ratio will change. If they will fit under the fenders, you could space the rims away from the drum a bit to get wider tires on.

It seems like you might be compromising your safety. In my opinion It is now time to abandon this project. Not worth your safety to have pretty looking tired. Wayne

yes I figured id have to make sure the hight of the arm would have to stay the same

no fenders so no problem there

How about an adapter that would move the brake rod to a location along the frame and out of the way of the tires. Like this. I haven't tried it, just thinking up a possible solution. Since it is a speedster you should be able to get by with it.

not a bad idea but I think the way you have it there it would hit the adpter to. good out of the box thinking tho. mine are actually tipped out already. I think I'm going to simply heat them and bend them in as much as they are bent out, and then geometry will stay the same
