Default First oil change Babbet In pan

Put rebuilt engine in car 3 months ago . Decided to change oil After 300 miles. Oil catch pan had a few pieces of babbet in it the size of cigarette tobacco Concerns? Engine runs and sounds beautiful. T. I, A, RAY

You said the size of cigarette tabaco shred, not the size of the diameter of a cig butt, right? In that case,,,

Could be scrappings left during final bearing fitting? Could be total failure of new babbit job? Or, could be anything in between. Drive it like you stole it, just my opinion.

Oh, and check on it in another couple hundred miles, oil is cheap!

Now if it is bigger, better have a look-see up close and personal.

Ray, I agree with Corley. Drive it and keep an eye on it. These engines are very robust. Have fun.

I think I’d at least inform the reconditioner of what you found immediately, and do it in writing so you can prove later that you have if the need arises. Talk to him about it and see what he says - maybe ask him to have a look-see.
I hope he stands behind his work and makes good under the warranty if needed.
I’m sure other barners would like to know who rebuilt the motor and his response, if you feel like disclosing.

Thanks for the replies. I did contact the builder and he sez to drive it as it may be something he missed on the wash out before assembly. He sez if a problem does exist he will surely remedy without cost to me RAY

I found a small chunk of Babbitt after my first 500 plus mile trip. That was 34,000 miles ago, and I’ve never had the pan off.

I would venture there was some residue left over from burning in the bearings, that did not get removed completely. If it is just a few small pieces, I would run the car maybe 500 mi and change the oil again. If no more tobacco pieces show up or just much less, and the engine runs good, I would just chalk it up to the engine not getting totally cleaned up before the oil pan got put on! And in a couple more oil changes if the tobacco pieces stop showing up, all should be well.
