Default rear shock dogbones

ordered repro dogbones for 47 merc rear shocks.one side went together well, second (driver side)will not tighten, the tapers do not lock together, and theball studs just spin in the matching holes.Think I should add a thin shim in the hole?

I would be returning a defective part.

Well you need to decide whether the anomaly is in the dogbone links or the shock and axle tapers.

If the one dogbone fits ok on both sides and the other is loose on both sides, then one dogbone is defective. If both dogbone fit ok one side and they are both loose on the other then the shock and axle are both worn and would require shimming (I suppose).

We can't tell you the answer, you have the means at your disposal to investigate and find the answer for yourself.

Did the old ones fit ok both sides?

I suspect the repro bones might be defective but you need to prove that before returning them or locating another source.

Mart.

The stud spinning is problematic.

Ok I see. Use a non locking nut first. Make sure threads are clean, and a plain nut spins freely on them. Die them if necessary. Give the stud a tap with a hammer to set it in the hole. Use a plain nut and tighten. Then remove nut and use a locking nut.

most likely a defective taper on the one dogbone, procured from a primary supplier of offshore products.Maybe slightly machined undersize.

You might consider looking for one of the old tubular strut type shock absorber kits. It was a common aftermarket update for 46 & 47 models. Many of the 48 models had tubular strut type shocks from the factory.
