Default Starter Drive Lube

I had the spare starter for my 59AB rebuilt, and the builder lubed the "thread" on the drive, with what looks like a light grease. As my memory serves, I remember reading a post where it was suggested not the use a lube. What is correct?

no lube other than maybe a wipedown with a penetrating oil to retard rust. Maybe he was using something to keep it from rusting.

Because of it's location, any type of lubricate would attract and retain dirt, etc.

I put a little graphite powder on my bendix when I rebuilt it. No issues.

Mine was rebuilt recently and had some grease on the gear as well. I guess it is something they do.
