Here's a picture I found for prices - shoot! I wish they'd have taken a picture of the whole truck! Sez this is from 1943, does that sound about right to all you "gramps" who can remember back that far?

The sign on the truck "our ceiling prices" confirms the time period as being during the government price controls. I don't remember when they ended, and wasn't even a glimmer in my father's eye when they started.

Trucks were used when I was young. Same truck, summer for ice, and in winter, coal.
Our coal bin was too small for a whole load, so my dad would have to find some one to take the rest of the load. The driver would not get just one ton and deliver it. Hauling the ashes out of the basement was my brother and my job. If we got lazy, it was still there in the summer when it was hot. Then it was worse.

Me too, I was still 8 years away in '43 (born in '51).

Now I do remember coal. We had a window in the basement that was directly above the coal bin, the truck would back up to and and they had a chute in the truck that would go thru the open window and he'd dump the coal. But I also remember when things were bad (recession, winter of '58/'59 especially) Dad couldn't afford a whole load so he would go to the grain elevator/coal store and get a small load of coal in the back of his pickup. Haulin' clinkers was a ton of fun too! Ugh!!!

Ken your wife must be doing your posts because I noticed in the past few months your grammer and spelling improved and was wondering about it. You correcting my spelling seems to confirm what I thought. As long as someone understands what I'm saying and I get the point across I'll take a D in spelling. G.M.

Here is a video of the horse and wagon. I was hoping for a truck from the 30's but no luck. Maybe the horse and wagon were better suited for some reason.

I don't remember the model A Ice trucks But my dad had an ice route in Kansas that I went with him to deliver ice but he drove a Graham Paige truck to haul the ice. All the rest I remember the signs, tongs & leather shoulder pads I was to young to Carry the big chunks of ice so I just offered moral support Dad also at the same time had a Philips 66 Station, sold Hides & bootlegged & we still had problems getting enough to eat at times. the depression was pretty hard on our family in the 30s.

Although I was raised in West Virginia we never burned coal, nor did anyone in this area. Matter of fact I have only been in one coal mine and it is an exhibition coal mine in Beckley, WV. We had an abundance of natural gas in the county where I lived. I was told they didn't have gas meters back in the early days, they charged a dollar a month per stove. Even though we didn't have electricty we had natural gas lights. It was a treat to watch my granddad change the fragile mantle or globe. With the slight touch of a finger it shattered. It was those times I heard his favorite saying. `The SOB that invented that shoulda died before he thought of it'. As previously mentioned.

Even today my natural gas bill is $64 a month on budget. Many families still have free gas in their homes due to having a gas well on their property.

Here is a link to an Ice truck. http://www.globalautogroupusa.com/19...Ice-Truck.html
I don't remember my father in law's truck having the high sides, but I could be wrong. This will have to do until I can find the picture of his. Enjoy...

Thta is the color I spoke of in my previous post! But I remember the sideboards having a canvas cover overhead and another canvas covering the ice. Thank you so much! It is beautiful!
