Default Restored Air Cleaner

I just finished restoring the air cleaner for my ’36 Fordor. I think it turned out pretty well; it’s amazing what a wire wheel and a little paint will do. But that’s not all…

I modified the housing to accept a modern, washable conical filter. With a few small changes (and quite a bit of work) it fits beautifully in the assembly. The whole thing had to be gutted, which was quite a process.

Now, before you all get your britches in a bind I’m not one that normally destroys scarce antique items that are perfectly good. But the problem is a previous owner of my car thought it was a good idea to BEAD BLAST the air filter housing. As you guys know these items aren’t really serviceable. No amount of blowing with the air hose or washing in the parts tank could get all of that abrasive crap out of the housing, which is why I made the tough decision to tear it apart and make these modifications.

On the bright side it should filter much better than the stock assembly and probably flow a lot more in the process.

Restored??? Wouldn't the proper term be re-designed???

Your wife is going to climb your frame if you mess up that nice breakfast table. LOL

Koates, the brand is Spectre. I bought it at Advance Auto Parts. It's a generic version of K&N and only cost about $20, which is less than half the price. I do not know the part number... I mistakenly threw the box away! I'll get you some measurements later today.

Yeah, perhaps. No need to worry, there's no wife to quarrle with and that's not a breakfast table; it's actually a stand-up desk I made a few years ago out of scrap hardwood flooring.

Charlie, I separated the canister just below top flange. I chucked it up in the lathe, ran it in back gear (SUPER slow) and ground it apart with a cut-off wheel. With how thin the metal is and how off-center it tends to clamp in the chuck you CANNOT use a regular cutter.

Koates,

The smaller end of the filter measures just about 4.75 inches in diameter; the larger one clocks in at 6 inches. The whole assembly measures about 6.25 inches high BUT you have to cut the rubber adapter off the filter so it fits in the assembly (see picture below). I used a utility knife to do this and simply cut it off at the base of the filter element. With a sharp blade it cuts like butter. With the adapter portion removed it measures about 4.625 (4 5/8) inches high.

I may try to separate a beatup one like that I have with surface rust pitting, but I would probably try making the cut at the bottom of the crimped flange so there would still be a flange on the top and bottom halves. I think this might keep the mating areas on both halves a bit stronger. I am also thinking maybe it could be made into an oil bath and keep the original dry filter element and screen at the to to look original. Just some thoughts. This may wind up being a better method of separation than the previous method of cutting those three legs at the top and soldering them back together after new elements are installed. Just some random thoughts but it took your pictures to get me thinking

The Spectre filter # is 9132 and it was $20 at the above mentioned store. This modification isn't a quick little project. Some fab work, and a LOT of zip wheel, nibbler, metal snips, files, rotary grinders of various types to get all the metal out of the inside to make it all work out. All that being said it will be worth it to me. I cant imagine that the stock "air filter" really did much of anything save keeping the leaves out of the carb throat!

I don't think any of us run our cars around on dusty dirt roads, at least I don't so I followed Fords instructions, " Wash with gasolene(I use laundry soap) rinse and dry, coat with engine oil and replace". I have run the old 35 since 1959, still runs good and uses no oil so must be an safe method.

Keith, what part are you referring to when you say Ford's instructions are to rinse with gas, etc ?. is it the wire mesh behind the square screen filter ?. thanks

Yes, the metal mesh should be oiled per Ford.
Here is the decal that the manufacturer attached to the side of the 1937 Ford Air Cleaner. Left is a 1939 aircleaner (91A-9600) and on the right is a 1937 part (78-9600)

It's been brought to my attention that the images on this thread have not been showing up. Some people wanted to see how I completely reworked the air cleaner on my '36. In case the original photos, which are hosted on that dreadful website Photobucket.com, aren't displaying properly, I've attached resized copies here. Hope this helps!

Very nice work, did these air cleaners always have the top pad? I have seen some with and some without. Can you buy replacements?
