Re: Which bolt holes do you guys use to hang engine on stand
Yes, but you only use four of them, two on each end. The second photo is the one I made.

Use common sense. How much weight do you want hanging out there. It takes very little weight to flip that block. Just because he jumped off the bridge and survived doesn't you'll make it.

Re: Which bolt holes do you guys use to hang engine on stand
I know for a fact a friend bought a father/son project, a 48-50 F1 that had the bell housing broken by hanging it on an engine stand. My friend made a hot rod out of it.
I have also heard that if you tighten all bolts equally into the stand it will not break the bell housing. I won't take that chance. Good blocks aren't cheap.

Strange this lite weight doesn't come crashing down "LOL" It is cast iron isn't it. Only has 4 bolts imagine that.Anyone want to take a guess as to the weight.

Re: Which bolt holes do you guys use to hang engine on stand
If you look at the pics walt dupont--me posts of the engines he rebuilds they look like he is bolted to the bells. And he probably rebuilds as many or more engines any anyone else on this site. If your worried about it bolt it on the side.
Most of the stories you hear about are a friends dads brother had one break like that. Or when i visited narnia a unicorn bumped into an engine mounted on a stand like that and it broke |

Like you've said before....why keep beating a dead horse? Bolt them up the way you prefer and move on.

Re: Which bolt holes do you guys use to hang engine on stand
The exhaust manifold stand mounting works fine with six bolts. As for handing the old style engines by the bell housing, old cast iron can be very brittle, and if it gives way, feet can also be a casualty as well as the block, itself. Manifold mounting balances the weight so the block can be flipped without worry. We do big industrial engines at our shop, and rig a safety with a chain fall "just in case".
