Can anyone point me to a reputable source for having a 12volt o/d solenoid rebuilt? It seems these things are rarer than rare so having mine rebuilt is my only option.

I think they are fairly common mercury Meteors used them in 62-3 & probably more years. I havfe been wondering if one would easily replace a 6V one in my 53 Merc when I convert car to 12 v???? [email protected]

BW OD was used by several manufacturers so there is some interchangeability. Two things to watch if you're shopping at swap meets is the mounting surface configuration and the orientation of the flat on the ball end of the the plunger that engages the drive plate.

That is also mentioned in the CTCI Thunderbird Restoration Manual. It appears relatively easy to "reclock" the pawl if you get one that is not in the correct position. It is best to check when you get a new one or note the position before you send yours away.
Another thing to watch for is how far the pawl protrudes out both with and without power.
I would have to look in the Manual to be sure but it seems to me that some are an inch and others an inch and a half.
