I purchased new camshafts for the rears and reusing the existing service brake arms. After assembling with the rivets I discovered I forgot the dust ring.

So I dissembled and purchased the dust ring. Problem is when I try to install, the service arm is binding when i try to spin it. Anyone run into this before? Should I grind down my service arm to eliminate the binding or drill out the rivet hole?

i have the same issue on both sides.

If you hav lubed it well and worked it good and it still binds, grind a little off the binding face.
It should rotate freely. Make sure the bushings a a good fit. That is a heavily loaded brg and a high wear area.

The last rebuild I did had that problem. Assumed the lever hole on the repro cam shaft was too far inboard. At any rate I "sprung" the dust ring open more to ride a little higher on the lever taper to reduce the drag. I opened the dust ring a little at a time and tested before upsetting the rivet. Realistically, most rarely drive on dusty roads and few miles anyway so it will never be a problem.

It seems it's the dust ring that binds up. The lever is loose now but as I spin the arm the dust ring binds every so often when i spin it. I'm tempted to leave it but if the ring gets in the right spot the arm will hang up.

It is like there is too much space and the ring gets down into the groove to cause binding

I have found that the tube that the shaft runs in gets worn between it and the lever and the dust ring wants to slip down and jam in the worn hole where the shaft fits. The last one I did I just popped it out and was fine. When you install the return springs it should help over come the binding, they are darn strong.

I guess that's my case, it's warn like you said. I'm thinking of removing the dust ring and putting in a rubber o ring instead

I rebuild a lot of backing plates and when I have this problem, I tap on both ends of the camshaft with a soft brass hammer until the arm moves freely. It does not take much force to free it.

Hi Mel

Have you run into the dust ring binding due to wear of the backplate “channel”? I think that’s my issue now where the ring can bind in there. I have it riveted in place and not sure if I should find new backing plates, get rid of the dust rings or leave it as is.
