Default hallogen lights

I just took off my headlight covers an i noticed there are halogen bulbs in there and a smaller bulb in the bottom half. Does the car need to be running to get enough power to make the halogen bulbs to work? The smaller bulbs work with car off but not the center halogens .

No.

Is it the type that use the original style sockets?
Did you test just the bulbs?

Here is what i have in each light..I got them to work ...In both lights the 3 prong in the back of the reflector was melted to the post .(one of the 3 prongs) . are these halogens too hot for a model a? maybe i should go back to the original set up. it was this way when i got the car.

The park light bulb should be on the top of reflector-not the bottom. One of the 3 prongs was obviously shorted out.On my A I run 6V with gen & have very good lights.I used 32-32 std bulbs, repop reflectors new lenses ,as the old lenses looked slightly yellowed with age when compared with the new ones, but it wasnt noticeable otherwise.I also soldered a ground wire to the rear of the bulb sockets & grounded them under a sanded offspot on the frame under the front hood hook screw. The other HL wires go directly from bulb sockets to bollet connectors on inside of rad shell. Also solder as many terminals as possible as a crimped terminal on its own is not as good as a soldered one.I can cruise at 55 in OD at night & have good lights.A 6V system isjust fine, but good grounds are very important.IF you are running AC,then12V N is mandatory.Besides the ugliness of seeing an alt under the hood, its simply not needed on the A.

The halogen bulbs that use the three prong connection like sealed beam headlamps are the more powerful halogens that need a 60 amp alternator. The halogen bulbs that fit the original sockets are available in both six or twelve volt and will work with the original generator. The more powerful halogen bulbs won't work with the original generator.
