Replacing Front & Rear Springs on 1936
Hi Barners,
I'm about to return my Leaf Springs to my 36 Club Cabriolet and I don't want to accidentally wear one. Please recommend a SAFE way to put them back onto the Shackles. I have gone thru 15 pages in a Search with no answer. Thanks, Bruce/CT

Usually a "spring-spreader" will get the job done. I am sure there are multiple threads on here showing many different kinds. That is if you have regular stock springs. If you have reversed spring eyes, it's a whole diferent excercise.

Re: Replacing Front & Rear Springs on 1936
In addition to a spring spreader, I like to put a large c-clamp or two next to the center bolt while I am handling the spring. I remove them just prior to lifting the axel (front or rear) into the vehicle.

This style with the pins keeping it from sliding sideways is nice.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/35-48-Ford-M...515709&vxp=mtr I still use my oldstyle just cause it has a built in ratchet...one day i will probably eat a spring....a scary amount of energy built into them when installed. |

Mine is strong enough. I can't say if one you might make might be. Mart. |

Re: Replacing Front & Rear Springs on 1936
I took them OFF to clean them up a long time ago. Now I want to put them back. The Front and Rear End are off the car. Original stock springs.

This seems to be the mother of all Spring Spreader posts:
Search for Homemade Spring Spreader or cut and paste: https://www.fordbarn.com/forum/showth...8051&showall=1 great info... |

Porta power is what I used. Safe and easy.

You can attaché one end first this reduces the chance of this flying to bits .Then use the porter power or make up a jack ,Ted

Re: Replacing Front & Rear Springs on 1936
I could not get a good spring spreader when I did mine. I opted to use a porta-power unit and it did the job fine. Felt pretty safe while doing it. Good control of the loaded springs too. High quality c-clamps are a good safer measure.

Re: Replacing Front & Rear Springs on 1936
In the past I've bolted up the main leaf by itself, then using four large woodworker's clamps added and compressed a leaf at a time to the pack. My local auto parts store stocks long spring bolts that make assembly pretty easy. I just zip off the excess tail of the bolt with a die grinder, then run a die over it to clean up the threads.

I have posted this before how to .Here's a Model T and a revers eye s, Like Banjo says the porter power works a treat .For the revers eye you can use the U bolt ties or the smaller end shackles .Ted

Re: Replacing Front & Rear Springs on 1936
I made mine too as described above with 1 1/4 pipe and 1" threaded rod. I welded a c shape each end to wrap around the shackle and prevent slip off. Much easier when doing this not hunched up under the car and roll the completed rear end under the car.
You can also do this installing the main spring on its own. Then use multiple G clamps to bring the top leaves into position using a long spike to keep the centre bolt holes lined up. Need a heap of good quality clamps this way. |
