We use dans gears, no gear noise and seem to last forever, (never replaced one just put it back in the next motor) Tom , think its called a timing gear because it sets the cam timing .??

Dan Your gears look so good it makes you want to leave the front cover off so we can look at them. Great machining job. Also the ones that I have used fit just like they should.

I replaced on on my 31 that was clicking/ knocking it was fiber over alum. with a new nos ford one from Hershey that got ripped up after first trip after replacement found out that it was oversize but not marked had to drop oil pan to clean all the broken pieces lesson learned I do like the safety factor with the fiber one's Mitch

I guess the original one's made 80 years ago were really built, but have begun to delaminate by now. Bratton;s sells a Fiber gear that they say is much stronger than the average verity available today. Still is this besst gear still as good as the originals produced 80 years ago? Back then they had a way of brute forcing things. Still with the advanced technology today you would think they could produce a stronger material... But perhaps such a product would be too expensive.

I've used all of the fiber gears sold by Brattons and Snyders . Some failed sooner than later. I explained to one of the guys at Snyders the trouble that I was having with the fiber gears , back in the 1990s ... I told them that I needed a stronger gear, They sent me a Dan McEachern bronze gear with his name on it and that solved my timing gear problems . As for stronger gears, I've never had a metal gear fail. Metal gears do cost more and are worth every cent to me. If a person insists on using the cheaper , weaker fiber gears, any of the venders will gladly sell them one.

The cam gear in my coupe dates from the 1980's, but has less than 5,000 miles on it -- I am very glad I pulled the cover off before I started driving it. 24 of the 50 teeth are missing at least a third of their volume. The engine had not yet skipped time.

It will be replaced with an aluminum gear, along with a new steel crank gear.

Archie

P.S.: This is clearly a macerated fiber gear.

Default But, is it art ? ? ?

Carl,

Thanks, I think I'll do that -- once I have my coupe (Fay) on the road . . .
