Default Here's a Flathead water pump. Let's rebuild it. Sunday tech quickie

The old flathead water pumps are easy to rebuild. I needed one for the 59 flatty / 32 Sedan project and rebuilt this one. Kits are available, so watch along and see how it goes.

Mart: where’s the best place to get the rebuild kits?, I’m sure there are a lot of non-USA kits available.

Hi Vette. The kit I used came from Macs. I'm sure all the usual vendors sell the same kit. I'm not sure if there are any non USA vendors. I might be a bit stumped if I want another one.

Edit: the kits are available in the UK but are the macs kits and they are approximately 2 and a half times the price!

Mart: Thanks for posting that excellent video.

QUESTION: Do you put any type of lubricant on the steel shaft before
pressing it into the impellor?

Hope you find time to show us how to rebuild the other style 8BA pump.
Thank you.

No lube on the shaft. Should I? It did scrape some metal off on it's way through. I don't have any 8BA pumps. I think they are the more modern style with a ballbearing shaft assembly, like the truck pump. Hence more difficult.

Mart.

Go for it HD. Just make sure they are the right type. I am told the 8BA are the more complicated type. Make sure the surface the seal rides on is in good condition.

Mart, very interesting video of the water pump. The pumps I needed on the 52 Merc are a little different. I think they have a narrow cast pulley and pretty sure I"d break them if I tried any kind of disassembly. I got new pumps (or rebuilt) from Napa.

Thank you Mart. Most excellent! I have a milk crate full of those early pumps and I have seen exploded diagrams of what's inside, but they still intimidated me so I always bought new ones. The woodie has Drake's ball bearing type. Not only does your video give me the confidence to try this, but now I'm gonna build a press. Way too much hammering on a punch in this neck of the woods for the last 40+ years! Thanks again.

I am going to suggest Fred ( Barnfind08 ) at Southside Obsolete. He is sure to have some good USA kits
