When I got my 56 Ford 312 they said it would not idle and when it did like a hot cam also. I put new plugs, wires, new electric choke didn't help. It had bes points then I put a magnet in the dist and full of metal shaveings. Then I put a rebuilt dist from NAPA the the car idle very smooth. If the bushings are shot the engine will not idle like it should. That was my problem. So do check the dist.I also bought a new carb which didn't help also.
